Signifier is sound associated with or image of something.
Signified is the idea or concept of a thing
Sign is the object that combines the signifier and signified into a meaningful unity
I <3 NY = I refers directly to the reader, heart is an icon used to relay a message, Ny is the location to which the slogan refers to.
Signified; feeling love for something and here the something is new York.
Milton Glaser, iconic image for bob Dylan and was inspired by marcel Duchamp self-portrait. The energetic design using colour and pattern conveys the psychedelic drugs that gained popularity amongst members of the counter culture.
Peace sign (Holtom)- the symbol is a super-imposition of the flag semaphore for the characters N&D (nuclear disarmament)
Seeing the peace symbol through the language of semiotics: signifier N&D merged to create a new abstract symbol, signified nuclear disarmament
Iconography= ‘image-writing’- the word conveys the idea that an image can tell a story. We talk about how images are represented and the meaning behind them
The great wave of kanagawa: woodblock print by Hokusai. Seoul created a digital illustration based on his work years after it was made. This was put on a billboard on the city buildings.
Redundancy: the opposite of simplifying the message, adding extra content to a message in the form of words, phrases or images.
Neville Brody: different forms of typography and fonts rather than working with the rhythm of the page in FUSE magazine. He researched the essence of typographic signs to the point of losing in some cases their immediate legibility.
the opposite of reduction is the essential redundant space extremely full of information with which to deal.
Andreas Gurky: photos completely in focus in any particular in which the quantity of elements and details creates a vertigo in the viewer.

task 1:

Glazer communicates himself and his artwork by establishing his background before his work. atypical of a common artist self-presentation, he uses his background to introduce his work. What's interesting about his writing as the word count increases is the separation of experiences and topics in his life. I think his objective in presenting himself and his work in this way (separated and in various amounts of detail), was to introduce himself as a person before his artwork, or someone who creates art. by creating a purely written introduction, he showcases himself as an artistic person before presenting his work to the viewer, which doesn't often happen. for most artists, their work is the intrigue of their self presentations, however Glaser has taken a different route. I think his audience is slightly more sophisticated artists or people who want to approach art or the view of art in a different way. he's presented himself as a person talking about his life and experiences and I think that's really interesting, as I'm sure others do too.

I've had never heard of the phrase semiotics prior to the presentation so it was interesting to be able to explore what that was and what it meant. I have previously looked at and since, been an admirer of neville Brody's work for a while so it was good to understand more about his work and how he creates it. looking back at it, even though I didn't know various symbols and icons are called semiotics, I have seen it across many different artworks and major pieces in the media mostly.

In this religious artwork, there are symbols around the subject (Jesus). While researching various artworks, I found religious artwork to have lots of different symbols and icons that we don't necessarily see in the 21st century. I think for people who understand religious language, these artworks are something they're able to understand and will hold meaning to them.
