work of choice: Edward Steed - Cartoon Cautionary tales.

what drew you to the reference?

going into this project, I wanted to create a stop motion as a final piece and Steed did the same thing. he created very basic sketches and created short stop motions. the only difference between his idea and mine, was that I wanted to digitally sketch out each frame of my stop motion animation.

what story is being communicated and how?

his characters and sketches are included in many stories (7 in total) but they all told different stories. One was about sport and the events that happened while he was playing with what I think was a javelin. each story bled into one another so even though they were all separate, they still had a link between each other. for some, the title and theme was highlighted before so the viewer can understand what the next part is about.

based on your observations and analysis of the story, what strategies do you think you can incorporate in your work?

I think that since I want to create a stop motion, I can take inspiration from his animation. I've noticed that some parts of the film such as the title is written out twice but the same two clips and being repeated and played over to show movement and create motion even though there are only 2 drawings in those frames.

Nadine Redlich - the illustrator is known for their use of dry humour and wit in condensed sequential stories.

what drew you to the reference?

for my outcome, I plan to create two different pieces; one is a stop motion and the other a 5 part illustration series. I chose Redlich's work because it followed a story and communicated ideas through illustrations presented as a series rather than animation.

what story is being communicated and why?

in her work, she often communicates her message through humour and jokes, which means that her work uses dialogue. I did some planning in regards to adding dialogue to my work too but ended up keeping it purely illustrative and no words.

what strategies do you think you can incorporate into your work?

just like hers, one of my ideas is a 5-part series of illustrations that convey a story around the quote 'later that evening'. I like how she laid out her stories so I might experiment with the layout or I might keep it as 5 separate images.
