Core skills reflection- week 2

Monday 18th September

how was your experience of drawing on location?
I loved the experience of drawing on location because I was able to capture the unique shadows and highlights and shapes of a building that would only come at a certain time of day. I feel like I had enough time (30 mins) to capture a very rough idea of the shapes and shadows the building had. Creating that base of a drawing helped because I later was able to develop it into something better.

What was challenging/successful about the workshop?
my style of working and drawing is very rough and illustrative so I think what I enjoyed is having the flexibility to draw the building/surroundings in my own style. However I did find the ‘transforming the drawings’ slightly difficult because I wasn’t sure where I wanted to take the drawing. I ended up doing a collage with multiple materials but I didn’t like it, so I redid it focusing on colour rather than mark making in my new version, which turned out successful.

what did I observe from my classmates that was valuable?
with my classmates, we as a group, all went to draw the same thing, but when it came to transforming the drawings, we went in completely different routes which was so interesting to see because even with the same foundation, every artist is able to take something their own route and create something so unique.

Tuesday 19th September

did the workshop highlight any materials that i had not considered before? And how did the workshop suggest new techniques or directions that I might adopt?

the core skills workshop helped me conduct experiments using unique materials that I would usually use, such as old receipts and cup sleeves. rather than actively attempting to make an actual object, playing around with the 3 types of processes really helped to see where I could use these materials and where I could take it in future experiments. I have never tried melting plastic to create work before so that was really interesting and inspiring to work with. depending on the material, I can use that formative process to create something in the future using the process of melting and changing the form of something.

did I find working in groups useful or difficult?

for this project, I preferred to work more individually because I was able to guide my work in the direction I wanted, rather than potentially compromising some ideas or plans I wanted to pursue.
